These two watches are top contenders in the GPS watch arena with their similar technology. But this is about the only thing these two watches have in common. They differ in almost every other way – looks, other offerings, etc.

Today, we want to look at how these watches compare, to help you make your best decision of these watches.

It’s going to be a pretty long review. So, if you can’t spare the time right now, you might want to read our comparison overview section to get the gist of the review. We still advise, though, that you read the entire article as there’s only so much information you can get from a summary.

Table of Contents

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave – Comparison Overview

The Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave are both pretty similar watches with pretty similar functions.

They operate with the same solar GPS technology. So, they charge using sunlight (the brighter the better). They also hold power for a really long time. We are talking about 6 months, at least. Between both of them though, the Citizen holds power for longer – about two and a half years.

Since these watches set their time using GPS, you can count on them to always give you accurate timing. In fact, these watches boast about 40 different time zones. So, you don’t even have to set the watch as you travel.

Citizen obtains its satellite acquisition about 3 seconds faster than the Seiko Astron. Problem is that while the Seiko Astron updates once a day, the Citizen Satellite updates once in 3 days.

However, that’s on paper. According to users who have worked with these watches, the Seiko Astron actually updates once in 3 days while the Citizen Satellite Wave does that once in 6 days. This isn’t a unanimous opinion though.

We can’t really put one over the other when comparing these two as they have pretty similar features.

Both lack daylight savings and are widely varied in the layout and markings of their dial. Also, some models in both watch lines come with a chronograph while others do not.

Altogether, you can’t go wrong with any watch from any of these lines.

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave – Our Opinion On The Price/Value Ratio

Well, the Seiko Astron is more expensive than the Citizen Satellite Wave, in most cases. This is not to say that it automatically makes the Citizen Satellite Wave the better choice in this case. Both these watches are quite great for their prices.

Considering that the Seiko Astron comes with a ceramic bezel and also better anti-reflective coating, it’s understandable why the Seiko Astron is more expensive than the Citizen Satellite Wave. These features, naturally, give the Astron watches an edge in appearance and durability.

So, if you do a price/value comparison, you find that, in the end, you get what you pay for.

But besides that, the Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave have a range of watches available selling for different prices. There is definitely a watch for all budgets in either watch line.

As usual, watches with the chronograph function (for Seiko and Citizen) are more expensive. So, you want to keep that in mind.

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave — Brand Comparison

Seiko is a world-renowned watch brand. Opening shop in 1881, more than a century ago, this brand has many firsts to its records.

For instance, it is credited as being the brand to create Japan’s first wristwatch in 1913. Many years later, in 1969, this brand would also go on to create the world’s first-ever quartz movement.

Although Seiko is still very much a watch brand, the brand’s interest in metallurgy and mechatronics has led to its delving into the manufacturing of other products.

Examples of such products include jewelry, camera parts, and other precision instruments.

Citizen, on the other hand, is a relatively younger brand, although it has also been around for about a hundred years too.

They are the official timepiece of entertainment colossus – Disney. The brand prides itself on its inclusive approach to watch-making.

The Citizen brand maintains that it creates timepieces that citizens from all over the world can use and enjoy. Hence their brand name.

We’ve seen how, over the years, Citizen has shown a sense of responsibility towards our environment. With some innovation, Citizen created Eco-drive technology which has boycotted the use of discarded batteries that destroy our environment. Instead, they operate with the use of renewable energy.

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave – What Situation Is Each Watch Best For?

Seiko Astron

Citizen Satellite

Watches in the Seiko Astron line are beautiful, no doubt. They are also high quality. Sincerely, picking any of these watches over the other would be a matter of personal preference since they are so similar.

Nonetheless, there are a few tiny details that might swing your opinion in the way of the Seiko Astron.

The first is that the Seiko Astron watches have a ceramic bezel. Many sophisticated watch users might prefer a ceramic bezel for a number of reasons.

First, it is resistant to scratching and it’s also really tough, so it will survive a hit with a significant amount of force.

The next is that this watch adjusts its time once every day which is important for watch accuracy.

And then again, this is Seiko, the makers of the Japanese quartz movement and other prolific watch technologies.

This is a watch to go for if you value the looks and durability of a statement piece above a slightly less than perfect timekeeping.
As for the Citizen Satellite Wave watches, one reason people might sway towards them is that they are more affordable than the Seiko Astron watches.

However, even more importantly, it would seem that the Citizen Satellite Wave watches keep a more perfect time than Seiko Astron watches.

According to some users, you’re looking at -15 seconds for Seiko Astron but just about -5 seconds for Citizen Satellite Wave.

That’s truly impressive.   The Citizen Satellite lacks the ceramic bezel and quality of anti-reflective coating that the Seiko Astron has, from the look of things.

So, if you’re not so big about the looks and are more concerned about a perfect time, the Citizen Satellite might be your go-to.

This is not to say that the Seiko Astron does anything less than perfect though, the Seiko Astron is just slightly more precise.

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave – Common Features

The Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite are quite similar in appearance and even in their technologies. They only vary slightly in appearance. Let’s check out how these two watch lines compare.

What Are the Common Features of Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave?

The common features that can be found in both Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave are:

1. Case

2. Dials

3. Synthetic Sapphire Crystal

4. Crown

5. Movement

6. GPS Solar Technology

7. GPS Time Zone

8. GPS Time Setting

9. Bands

1: Cases

What type of case do Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave come in?

Both the Seiko Astron and the Citizen Satellite Wave watches come with a stainless steel casing. With a stainless steel casing comes the assurance of durability and sturdiness.

As you may well know, stainless steel is quite resistant to rust. As a result of this, even with continued exposure to the elements, it remains relatively unruffled for a long time.

Because these two lines of watches have many models, their polishing also differs. In most cases, these watches have either a brushed stainless steel effect or a polished effect or both. This makes the watches quite eye-catching in their own right.

Another similarity between these two watches is that they both come with the back screwed into place. This is important to ensure that all the important parts of the watch don’t get exposed to the elements.

Please avoid tampering with the back of your watch if you’re not a watch repairer yourself. Tampering with your watch and not screwing it back properly could cause your watch to malfunction. That’s something you want to avoid.

On the Seiko Astron, you’d find the Seiko Tsunami symbol which is characteristic of all Seiko watches. It’s a symbol of the water-resistance feature of your watch.

When it comes to size, these watches are typically large and would mostly fit those with large hands. But then there are also watches with smaller diameters which would fit people with smaller wrists if you’d prefer.

2: Dials

The dials of these watches differ, expectedly, but not just from Seiko to Citizen. Even within the Seiko Astron and the Citizen Satellite Wave, these dials differ quite significantly. They both have pretty serious-looking dials with different layouts and markings, depending on the watch in question.

Also, depending on the model you get, some watches might come with chronographs while others might not.

Citizen does appear to have more complicated dials than Seiko, although that might not be enough to tell them apart. One way you can do that is the obvious way. Both Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite watches have their brand names inscribed on the dial of the watches.

Besides the chronograph complication, many models of these watches also come with date complications as well.

3: Synthetic Sapphire Crystal

So, when it comes to crystal, everyone knows that mineral is the cheaper variety for lower-end watches. This is why there’s all the rave about sapphire crystals. We’re pretty sure you’ve heard about sapphire crystals but just what is a synthetic sapphire crystal?

What is a synthetic sapphire crystal?

Synthetic sapphire crystal is a hard, transparent material that is man-made rather than naturally-occurring as you have with sapphire. It is made by the crystallization of pure aluminum oxide.

This is usually done at super high temperatures to produce a synthetic material that is as hard as sapphire. Sapphire is a very hard material, ranking just below diamond at number 9 on the Mohs scale (rubi and sapphire are the corundum mineral in Mohs scale). Diamond ranks at number ten.

The only thing that’s different between synthetic sapphire and naturally-occurring sapphire is that the synthetic sapphire lacks the coloring agents that the naturally occurring sapphire has. So, synthetic sapphire is unable to give off that natural hue that gems usually have.

After the crystals have been obtained from the heating of aluminum oxide, the round masses are then sliced using saws with teeth coated in diamond. Afterwards, the sliced pieces are then ground and polished to form the watch crystals we know.

Usually when a watch crystal is made from synthetic sapphire, it is referred to as scratch-resistant or it might also be marketed as “virtually scratchproof.” Well, this is because synthetic sapphire is almost impossible to scratch.

“Almost impossible,” not “impossible.”

Diamond can scratch synthetic sapphire and so can silicon carbide, which ranks between a 9 and a 10 on Mohs scale. So, if you have an instrument that contains silicon carbide, it will definitely scratch the surfaces of these watches.

In comparing these two crystals, we’d say they are pretty much similar except that the anti-reflective coating on Seiko watches appear to be better. In fact, some have said that the coating is so good, you don’t even get to see the glass.

But then again, Seiko is the more expensive watch in this case. So, you get what you pay for, right?

4: Crown

What are the features of the crown on Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave?

Seiko Astron and the Citizen Satellite Wave both come with crowns that are at the 3 o’clock or 4 o’clock position.

If the watch comes with a chronograph, the crown is going to be in the 3 o’clock position. That is to make room for the other buttons that usually have their places on either side of the crown.

The crowns on these watches appear large and easy to use. You find that the edges of the crowns of these watches are lined with fine teeth to help with grip. They are also quite easy to use on both watch lines.

5: Movement

What type of movement do Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave use?

The Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave watches use the Japanese quartz movement as the engine of their watches. The quartz movement is a popular one among watches. There are two types of quartz movements – the Swiss quartz movement and the Japanese quartz movement.

What is the difference between Japanese quartz and the Swiss quartz?

There are a few differences that exist between the Swiss quartz and the Japanese quartz. The Japanese were the first to introduce the quartz movement into the market. However, the Swiss quartz movement is considered higher quality than the Japanese quartz movement.

It is also held to a higher esteem than Japanese movements and is hence the more expensive movement of the two.

The Swiss quartz movement keeps perfect time, is highly reliable and accurate, and is resistant to water and shock.

On the other hand, we have the Japanese quartz movement with Seiko flying the flag as the leader in the Japanese quartz movement technology.

The Japanese quartz movement is an innovation pioneered by Seiko. With the innovation of the quartz movement, Seiko worked to make quartz watches more efficient. So, unlike their Swish counterparts, Japanese quartz watches tend to be less bulky and consume less power. In fact, some of them even feature an automatic alarm as well.

Like the Swiss quartz, the Japanese watch also keeps perfect time and is water and shock-resistant. In fact, it is so accurate it is the official timekeeper of choice at different Olympic games.

6: GPS Solar Technology

Seiko and Citizen are not newbies when it comes to solar technology as well as GPS technology. With these two at work in your watch, you get accurate timing since the time zone is determined by GPS. Plus, batteries get charged from exposure to sunlight.

How do you get the best out of your Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite solar batteries?

To get the best out of your Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave, you should keep it under natural light as much as possible. That is because that’s the fastest way your watch will charge.

These watches hold a good amount of power in them and for a long time too. So, they are quite dependable. In comparison though, Citizen holds power longer than Seiko. While Seiko holds a charge for about half a year, Citizen holds a charge for about 2 and a half years.

As you may know, the lower the battery power, the more inaccurate your time becomes. So, for this reason, you want to ensure that your watch is charged regularly. Although the two watches reserve power for a long time, they don’t remain fully charged forever. So, ensure you charge your watch weekly, at least.

7: GPS Time Zones

How does GPS technology work in watches?

GPS technology in watches is designed to give watches the ability to identify known timezones and adjust accordingly. This is as against the radio-controlled watches. Such watches work according to the local time that it has been set to. But with watches that are fitted with GPS technology, you do not need to worry yourself with the timezone you find yourself in when you move from one timezone to another. The GPS will do that for you.

How does GPS work in Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite?

Time setting on the Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave is controlled and determined by GPS. These watches pick the time as decoded from a GPS signal. Based on this, they then adjust the time accordingly so the watch constantly remains accurate.

But this does not mean that if you ever have to travel, you don’t have to set the watch yourself. You may still need to do a bit of time setting even though there is a GPS feature.

On the Seiko Astron, there are about 39 to 40 time zones that the watch can adjust to. This depends on the Seiko Astron model you are using.

With the Citizen Satellite Wave watches, there are about 40 time zones on the watch which run across about 26 to 27 cities. The cities are listed on the bezel of the Citizen Satellite Wave Watch.

Comparing the satellite acquisition on both watch lines, the newer models of the Citizen Satellite Wave watch line seems to have an advantage over the Seiko watches. The newer Citizen Satellite Wave watches are about 3 seconds faster than the Seiko Astron watches.

8: GPS Time Setting

What are the time setting features in Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite?

The Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite Wave watches have three modes when it comes to time setting. There’s the timezone setting mode, the manual time setting mode, and then there’s the automatic time adjustment as well.

Besides the 3 main modes, there are also other elements that help with time setting. They include the leap second adjuster, as well as a switch for daylight savings. GPS data does not show daylight savings on either of these watches. So, you’d have to turn on and turn off daylight savings yourself.

Seiko makes daily auto adjustments to its time. On the other hand, Citizen does it once in 3 days. This is a plus for Seiko.

In both cases though, your watch would need to have good reception, be well exposed to light, and must also be sufficiently charged before it can attempt to connect to a satellite. Typically, it requires about 4 satellites for your watch to get sufficient information enough to update.

Video: Seiko GPS/Manual Time Adjustment

This video will show you how to set your watch using GPS and manual settings

9: Bands

What type of band do Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite have?

Both Seiko Astron and Citizen Satellite have a variety of bands you can select from. There’s the jubilee bracelet made from stainless steel. With this bracelet, either of these watches would make pretty good dress watches. Citizen even has a few models in black finish which look really good.

Besides the jubilee bracelets, there are also other kinds of bands to choose from like the leather option, rubber, and sometimes canvas.

Whichever style you fancy, we bet there’s a watch with a band that fits your need.

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave – Unique Features

There’s only one unique feature between the Seiko Astron and the Citizen Satellite Wave watch lines. This unique feature is in their bezels. While the Seiko Astron comes with a ceramic bezel, the Citizen Satellite Wave comes with a metal bezel, in most cases.

Also, besides that, both watches have city codes written all around them in tandem with the different time zones.

Unique Features of Citizen Satellite Wave 1: Metal Bezel

What are the features of the bezels of Citizen Satellite Wave?

The bezels of the Citizen Satellite Wave watch is made of metal. They are quite durable and long-lasting. They arenot prone to shattering from impact.

But though they are less prone to shattering, they are scratch-prone. Plus, they do not retain their colors quite unlike ceramic bezels that keep looking good for a reasonably long time.

Metal bezels do offer a nice variety of colors that ceramic bezels do not offer though.

Unique Features of Seiko Astron 2: Ceramic Bezel

What are the features of the bezels of Seiko Astron?

The bezels of the Seiko Astron are made of ceramics. In comparison to metal, ceramic bezels are better looking and last longer. Although they are more expensive if you ever have to replace them, they are worth it. The longevity of the bezels offsets whatever extra it costs.

Most high-end watches these days shun metal bezels for ceramic ones as they are more attractive to the eyes than stainless steel. They are also more durable and are quite resistant to scratching.

Ceramic bezels are also quite tough and do not shatter that easily.

But, generally, ceramic bezels are not available in all the various colors that metal bezels come in which might be a reason some might want to snub ceramic bezels.

Seiko Astron Vs Citizen Satellite Wave – General Feeling Among Customers

Generally, we’ve got to mention here that most customers can’t seem to point at any particular difference between both watches. Many who picked either f these watches simply did for personal reasons and not really objective ones.

Seeing this, it’s really hard to compare both watches based on customer reports but we’ve come up with something below.

Seiko Astron

Citizen Satellite Wave

We found that many love the Seiko Astron for its looks. It’s not the only reason they love the Seiko Astron but it’s definitely a big deal maker for many.

Besides that, there are also many who love the Seiko Astron for its accuracy and whatnot.

From what we gather though, looks and personal preference are the main reasons people go for the Seiko Astron over the Citizen Satellite Wave.

Plus, we’ve got word from buyers that the Seiko Astron watches are quite durable.
On the other hand, looks don’t seem to be the main reason people are going for the Citizen Satellite Wave although it’s pretty good looking.

Seiko Astron Vs Citizen Satellite Wave – Final Comments

Even for us, it’s hard to really pick one watch over the other. We think they each have their areas of strength and competence and your choice of either watch should be based on your personal preference.

They are really beautiful watches, by the way. They have a high-end look and feel and are quite solid. Solar and GPS technology are actually quite good and impressive, except that neither has daylight savings automatically turned on. You’d have to do that manually.

Besides all of these, these guys are pretty much the same. The layout, markings, as well as your personal choice of the bezel, might sway you to one watch over another.

These watches are quite pricey though. Maybe not as pricey as Rolex watches but they do cost a pretty penny. We do hope our review has helped you make a worthwhile decision between these two watches.

Seiko Astron vs Citizen Satellite Wave – FAQs

What is a satellite watch?

A satellite watch, also known as a GPS watch, is one that uses the time signals and position data gotten from a GPS satellite to automatically adjust the day/date and time. If you are wearing a GPS satellite watch, it will keep track of your location and time zone by communicating with the GPS satellite.

The satellite orbiting in space will send the data to the GPS mechanism in the watch. With the information gathered from the satellite by your watch, the time will then be set according to the local time zone of your present location.

Do solar-powered watches last forever?

Solar-powered watches can last forever. They only need to be exposed to sunlight. Even when not exposed to the sun for some time, your solar-powered watch can still work but for a considerable length of time.

When fully charged, solar watches can last up to a month without needing to be charged again. There are some solar-powered watches that have power reserves that can last up to 6 months without being recharged.

One thing that must be noted is that if the battery’s power starts to run out, the watch will start having inaccurate timing. Therefore, it is advisable to know your battery’s lifespan and keep it optimally charged.

Are solar watches better than automatic watches?

Solar watches are better than automatic watches in some respects, while automatic watches trumps quartz in other ways. Solar watches have quartz movements and their batteries are charged by solar power.

Battery-powered watches are known to keep better timing than automatic watches. Their engines have fewer moving parts than automatic watches and are therefore easier and cheaper to maintain.

But in terms of durability, automatic watches are more durable. As a result of this, automatic watches last longer. Apart from that, automatic watches are made with high caliber materials. This makes them have higher quality than quartz watches.

Are solar-powered watches worth it?

Solar-powered watches have a lot of good qualities that make them worth the money spent on them. Here is a list of the features that make them worth having:

  1. There is no need to change batteries often. The battery can last for 10 – 20 years.
  2. They have accurate time-keeping ability.
  3. They are highly reliable.
  4. There is almost no need for you to take it for maintenance. The watch can work for a decade without going for servicing.
  5. They are not expensive.
  6. The best of all is that they are environmentally friendly.

Is the Seiko 4r35 a Good Movement?

The Seiko 4r35 is a good movement. Many notable Seiko watches have housed this movement with a good review. The 4r35 caliber has two variants – 23 jewels (4r35A) and the 24 jewels (4r35B).

The 23 jewels (4r35A) version was revised immediately after it was introduced. As a result, the 24 jewels (4r35B) took over and became the frontline movement for most Seiko watches.

Seiko 4r35 movement operates at 21,600 beats per hour or 6 beats per second. This is quite an impressive fit. At this rate, the watch that houses a 4r35 movement maintains good timing.

What makes Seiko one of the best watch brands?

Seiko watches are known to make watches that are durable, precise, and stylish. Because of the quality of its products, Seiko has been able to grow quite an impressive reputation. They have a wide range of products that is able to cater to the watch needs of diverse personalities.

Most of their high-end watches compare favorably with the esteem watches that are Swiss made. Despite the equality of the Seiko watches to those of the Swiss-made brands, the Seiko watches come at a ridiculously cheap price.
